The Beauty Treatment Fit Girls Are Dropping Mad Money On

“We’re seeing more and more women requesting keratin treatments for fitness-related reasons,” says Meri Kate O’Connor, senior colorist at Eva Scrivo Salons in New York City. (O’Connor specializes in the completely formaldehyde-free option, Goldwell Kerasilk Keratin Treatment.) “Women who work out almost every day don’t want to blow out and style their hair after every session. Keratin allows them to literally wash and go, without frizz and with serious shine.”

Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Keratin seals and coats the hair cuticle to make your hair smoother and more manageable—in other words, able to air-dry to perfection. Newer treatments (like Goldwell’s Kerasilk) penetrate deeper into the shaft so results take longer to wash out. But it’ll cost you a pretty penny: In New York City, keratin services generally run around $300 to $500 at most salons. You can expect to pay a little less in other cities.

Braid Around Your Temples
The moisture from your sweat causes frizz to accumulate most around your hairline, where you tend to get sweatiest. Braiding an inch or two of hair around your temples keeps the hair tucked into place, where it’s less likely to expand and fly away.

Add the Right Product Pre-Workout
If you aren’t going to wash you hair after your sweat sesh, be sure to use a frizz-reduction cream or serum during your blowout as a preventative measure. If you’re planning to wash your hair after your workout, use a tiny (think pea- or dime-size, depending on the length of your hair) amount of natural coconut oil to smooth the outer layer. (But word to the wise: Oil makes the hair a bit greasy…not a good look if you’re hitting the town after class.)
