There’s Finally a Way to Get Beauty Products Tailored to Your Skin and Hair Type

Does your hair feel drier in the winter and oilier in the summer, or is it behaving entirely differently now that you got highlights? Dossa says the concept is great for tweaking formulas as your hairstyle changes or the seasons shift.

On the Function of Beauty website, you can select your hair type, thickness, scalp condition, and even five hair goals you’d like your products to help you achieve. Then the real fun begins: You can pick the color of your shampoo and conditioner and even choose from scents like grapefruit hibiscus or passion fruit papaya. Finally, you select your size, and the bottles are sent to you. (Keep in mind is that shipping can take a bit longer for some custom brands.)

On the skin-care front, a custom serum bar in select Sephora stores is using the quiz concept to instantly concoct a formula made for you. “Why use a serum that contains extra ingredients that target concerns you don’t have?” says Sabrina Tan, founder of Skin Inc. The result: Smarter, more effective treatments that hone in on your primary issues. The serums use a patented Japanese technology in caviar-like capsules made of seaweed that release fresh ingredients when you apply them to the surface of skin.

The quiz covers lifestyle choices, skin genetics, concerns, stress, and your environment. Once serums are recommended, clients can blend them together in a mixer bottle of choice to create a tailored-to-you product called My Daily Dose (MDD). The brand recommends retaking the test every few months (or whenever you go to refill) to reflect any changes that arrive with shifting factors like seasons, stress, and age.

“Products are going to get smarter and more targeted to your individual needs,” says Tan. “One day, we’ll have technology that allows us to know everything about your skin on any given day, from water levels to collagen levels.”

Now, if we could just find a formula that walks the dog and takes out the trash, we’d be set.
