A woman has become a mum at 40 after having a tubal ligation procedure reversed so that she could try for a baby.

In a development that wasn’t expected by doctors, Donna Fiorenza, from Harvey, Western Australia, fell pregnant eight months after having her fallopian tubes untied.

She and her husband Peter have since welcomed a baby girl, Ella, who is now nine months old.

‘She is a bit of miracle, seeing as I had my tubes tied for 12 years,’ Mrs Fiorenza told Perth Now.

However, Ella’s arrival into the world didn’t come without its complications.

Mrs Fiorenza suffered from a condition called placenta percreta during her pregnancy – a condition where when the placenta attaches too deep in the uterine wall

CAN YOU REVERSE A TUBAL LIGATION?

Tubal ligation reversal is possible.

It is a procedure to restore fertility after a woman has had a tubal ligation — a procedure that cuts or blocks the fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy.

During a tubal ligation reversal, the blocked segments of the fallopian tubes are reconnected to the remainder of the fallopian tubes.

This may allow eggs to again move through the tubes and sperm to travel up the fallopian tubes to join an egg.

A tubal ligation reversal is more likely to be successful if there is still a large proportion of healthy tube.

At 31 weeks pregnant, the expectant mother began to hemorrhage.

What followed was six hours of gruelling surgery in an attempt to save Mrs Fiorenza’s life.

During two procedures, doctors were forced to perform a hysterectomy and remove part of Mrs Fiorenza’s bladder.

‘Ella was born within the first hour of my second procedure,’ Mrs Fiorenza told Daily Mail Australia, admitting the memories are still raw. ‘I got to meet Ella late the day after she was born.’

‘Peter didn’t know whether he was going to come out of this with a wife or baby or none. It was quite hard for him,’ she told Perth Now.

Both mother and baby survived the traumatic birth – and baby Ella is now thriving at nine months old.

Mrs Fiorenza, who runs a gift emporium for kids, wants her story to offer hope to others who may be in a similar situation to the one she was in.

‘Hopefully someone reads the story and it gives them comfort in a similar situation to never give up, always think positive and things can turn out all ok,’ Mrs Fiorenza wrote in a heartwarming Facebook post.
