I Tested 4 Edge Tamers on My Hair During Sweaty Workouts

The verdict: Forty-five minutes later, I was sweaty, although not as drenched as I would be had I done, say, an indoor cycling class. That being said, the Creme of Nature product held up better. I had no frizz around my hairline, and my hair didn’t feel sticky at all. Meanwhile, the Venice Hair paste evaporated slightly during my workout, leaving me with some frizz. While I’d still use it on a day I wasn’t exercising (read: sopping in sweat), it just didn’t hold up while I worked hard in class.

Here I am before my Fhitting Room workout

Keeping the momentum going the next day, I did 30 minutes of outdoor cycling followed by 30 minutes of a Jillian Michaels workout with resistance cables. This time, I applied the eco-friendly Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen Grow Restore Edge Treatment ($8, ulta.com) on one side of my hair. It has a Jell-O-like texture, which moisturizes the hair so that it’ll smooth out and lie down easier. It also promises to block humidity. I then applied Amla Legend Treasured Temple Edge Tamer ($7, softsheen-carson.com) on the other side of my hair. This is a stiffer gel/pomade that also blends into the hair pretty easily. After applying both products, I put my hair into two ponytails. The weather was really nice when I went out for my bike ride (70 degrees and just a tad humid), so I wasn’t drenched afterwards.

The verdict: The Amla Legend edge tamer held up well, keeping my hair flat and frizz-free. But while the SheaMoisture edge treatment was indeed very moisturizing, it just wasn’t right for a workout session. I’d use this one as an overnight treatment instead, because I did like how soft it kept my strands.

The bottom line: All of these products work at different levels, depending on the type of curl you have. None of them are going to hold up to a hot yoga class (but really, I don’t think anything would, right?). Still, it’s good to know you can get pretty sweaty and maintain your edges without too much hassle.
